ICSI Treatment: Success Rates, Risks, Cost and What to look forward.
ICSI known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection is an infertility treatment where a single sperm is placed directly into the center of the ovum. Doctors created this technique to assist couples facing infertility because of involvement of male infertility factor or couples had faced unsuccessful results in their previous try with IVF. This ICSI treatment is very efficient for fertilization & also gives couples hopes of getting successful pregnancy as a result. And the cost of treatment varies upon various factors, including hospital and chosen city for the treatment. Let’s say I live in Jaipur, and IVF cost in Jaipur varies between Rs 1lakh to 1.20 lakh per cycle, but if I choose Mumbai for the same treatment, the costs will start from Rs 1.80lakh up to Rs 2.20 lakh per cycle. So, choose according to your budget & convenience.
ICSI treatment requires a female partner to experience ovarian stimulation with the help of fertility medications for developing a mature embryo. These eggs were extracted from the vagina through vaginal ultrasound & grew under particular conditions into the embryology testing room.
An embryologist will prepare a sperm sample by filtering live sperm from unuseful dead once. Then embryologists will place one live sperm in a thin needle and inject it straight into the center of an egg.
This injection was first used at the beginning of 1994; a city known as UCSF in San Francisco Bay Area ran an initiative to accomplish a successful pregnancy with this procedure. Moreover, the First successful birth result using ICSI treatment came in February 1995.
Who should choose ICSI?
If any person is facing male infertility & sperm analysis is not normal. Then ICSI treatment may help them achieve pregnancy most effectively. Meanwhile, 75% of IVF cases in the Bay Area are now preferring ICSI treatment for some of these factors, more than male infertility, including:
- Unexplained Infertility
- Failure of past fertilization with IVF
- Deficiency in sperm counts
However, If the doctor finds any abnormalities during the sperm test, they recommend going with ICSI as a potential option. If a male already had a vasectomy reversal in the past, a recommendation is to go with ICSI regardless of semen quality issue. There is the presence of antibodies in sperms, which may impact fertilization.
The final decision to begin with ICSI treatment is specifically difficult because there are not enough previous pieces of evidence regarding the success rate in treating male infertility. Some couples try ICSI because they don’t want to leave any single method out there which may improve their chances for fertilization.
Meanwhile, people have to understand that While having normal parameters of semen fertility can be attained with Standard Insemination throughout IVF without using ICSI.
What are the risks of ICSI Treatment?
Every treatment has some risks while considering the risks of the ICSI procedure. If a person has fewer eggs than average, it may be because eggs got damaged with an incorrect needle insertion procedure.
Risk of childbirth with chromosomal abnormalities in the X or Y chromosome. At present, we don’t have enough research to know the reason for these risks.
Here are some of the problems related to Sexual chromosome abnormalities:
- Heart problems for affected infants that may require surgery
- Risk of behavior or learning disabilities.
- Increased risk of Miscarriage.
- A high risk of infertility in your children may be seen during adulthood.
On average, eight from every ten eggs fertilizes normally.
The risks of having chromosomal problems like – Down’s syndrome does not necessarily occur with ICSI. It increases because of maternal age.
How successful is ICSI Treatment?
With the help of the ICSI procedure, couples who have faced Male Infertility issues have accomplished pregnancy.
If we check fertilization rates, Around 70% to 80% of injected eggs are equivalent to normal semen. & If we compare pregnancy rates between IVF success rate of couples and ICSI couples. They are also comparable with couples who haven’t had male infertility factors.
What is the cost of ICSI Treatment In India?
